Dune: Prophecy - Season One Review

Episodes 1-3

TL;DR: Overall it's okay. Not great, but good enough that I'll keep watching.

  • Things started with a ton of voice over exposition in the first episode. Like, a books worth of intro to set things up.
  • The first episode didn't really hook me. If I'd had another show I was watching I'm not sure I would have watched the second one.
  • It feels like it's trying a little bit too hard and falls back to tropes that lack their own style. Not bad, just obvious in a way that feels plain.
  • It has the feel of something that didn't have quite enough time to get polished before making the final decisions. This goes back to the intro exposition where it feels like they had to explain a bunch of stuff because the show itself wasn't set up to do the "show don't tell" thing.
  • Everything looks a little bit too much like it was just made. Like everything is being worn for the first time.
  • The dialog feels like it's at the same tone and intensity most of the time. It's too tight. Like the actors weren't given enough time to find their characters voices.
  • All that stuff takes me out of the story from time to time, but it's not too bad.
  • I'm not really invested in it, but it's good enough that I'll give it a few more episodes to see if it can find its legs a little better.
