This year's family reunion was a resounding success. All the cookouts, card games, and conversations you could ask for. The chats included several folks asking me about AI. It became apparent there's very little info about the tech being passed around non-technical circles.
Companies are adding AI to anything and everything they can.

The language from google is things like "understanding" and "learning". These terms are miss-leading. There is not a single computer on Earth that's either consiours or has the ability to think
It's like seeing faces on things.
We don't actually undesrstand how they work Sending 1+1 into a calculator app always produces 2. That's not always the case with AI.

If a language model can consistently get the right answer for a particular type of question, and if researchers are confident that they have controlled for confounds (e.g., ensuring that the language model was not exposed to those questions during training), then that is an interesting and important result, whether or not the model understands language in exactly the same sense that people do.
