Rotate an SVG in Inkscape

October 2025

I'm using Concepts1 on my iPad to make SVGs. So far, so good, except for one annoying features: I haven't been able figure out how to get it to work in portrait mode. When I export something I did that way it turns 90 degrees. Seems the app considers the bottom to always be from a horizontal orientation.

There's a little orientation button I can set. Putting it to 270 degrees makes the exports stand the way I expect. Great. Except for when I forget to hit it. When that happens, I'm using Inkscape2 to rotate things to the right position.

The steps are:

  1. Edit -> Select All
  2. Object -> Rotate 90° CW
  3. Edit -> Resize Page to Selection

That last bit took me a while to find. It's what updates the bounding box to match the new orientation for the image.

Got it figured out now. That little reduction in friction opens up more energy to make more things. Can't wait to play with it more.

Footnotes

An SVG app you can still pay a one time fee for instead of a subscription. Now that I've got it and a process for getting SVGs on my site I'm getting lots of ideas for things to use it for.

A fantastic example of Free, Open-Source software. It's super polished and perfect for everything I've ever needed to do with vector graphics on my machine. I've got a license for Adobe Illustrator, but never use it. Inkscape is where I go instead.
