General Guidelines for a Good Life

  • Automate your investments (if you don't do anything else here, do this).
  • Aim to be in control of your time
  • Reduce Friction
  • Think about 20 years from now.

Not what you want to do in 20 years, but that something will be like if you put 20 years of practice into it.

  • If you aren't already investing. Start now. If you are, increase the amount
  • Everything is a prototype for what comes after it.
  • Practicing is a superpower.
  • We can't control our first thoughts. We can controls the ones that come after.
  • Adjusting the language we use to think about things is a superpower.
  • Listen three times (you don't like what you don't know).
  • Computers are magical but they aren't magic.
  • Helping, Hearing, and Hugging
  • Change orders of magnitude of money has more effect expected
  • There's a difference between the first time and all the times after
  • Your manager might care about you. Your company does not.
  • Talk about what you've done, not what you're going to do.
  • Practice Patients.
  • Just because something's easy for you doesn't mean it is for everybody.
  • Interesting problems and sharp tools
  • 10 hours to cut, 8 to sharpen the saws
  • Broken gets fixed. Shoddy is forever.
  • Simple things should be easy. Hard things should be possible.
  • Folks tend to over-estimate what they can do in one year and under-estimate what they can do in five.
